8. 'AMSTERDAM, ANTWERP AND GHENT'
Museum visits, art appreciation and sketching. Price includes tuition/art appreciation and ** B&B accommodation at the comfortable Acro hotel in the Museum Quarter of Amsterdam. Our second art appreciation and sketching visit to the Netherlands. Based in Amsterdam, close to the Rijks Museum and Van Gogh museum, sketch the picturesque canals and interesting Dutch architecture with Angela, using any water based media of your choice in this ‘Venice of the North’. William is a professional artist working in the Classical Northern European oil painting style and will offer advice and art appreciation during visits to the museums and give talks at our hotel offering a fascinating insight into the techniques and ideals of the major artists working during the Northern Renaissance in Holland and Flanders in the 15/16th centuries. Day excursions are planned to Ruben’s House in Antwerp (1677 – 1740) and to St Bravo’s cathedral in Ghent for the wonderful early oil painted altar piece ‘The adoration of the lamb’ by Jan Van Eyck. 11. ‘ICONS – FRESCO – GILDING – Discover Medieval and Renaissance painting techniques’
Andrew’s easy going manner and vast experience in restoring and working in the techniques of the early Medieval and Renaissance master painters and craftsmen, ensure that this practical ‘hands on’ course will take you into the realms of the Renaissance workshop. Gain a unique insight into the working practises and traditions of painting Icons using Tempera, and Fresco, which uses watercolour painted onto wet plaster; each with the addition of oil or water gilding. Use your own original design ideas or those based on historical sources provided by the tutor. If time, you may also be able to complete a piece using traditional methods of Verre E’Glomise – gilded and etched glass.

This course is the culminating stage in our unique 3 part series of Classical Northern European oil painting courses, linking together Parts 1 and 2. 20. ‘A BROADS SKETCH BOOK on ‘GOLDEN SUNSET’
Join Angela for daily cruising on the Norfolk Broads Northern stretches of inland waterways on the Centre’s own Classic Edwardian motor launch; exploring the rivers Ant and Bure and Barton Broad. Soak up the unique atmosphere and marvel at the abundant wildlife and peaceful watery environment; recording what you see, sometimes from the decks or ashore, in sketch books and with a camera. Angela will start each day with a short studio session to demonstrate speedy working techniques. One of John’s particular pleasures is painting portraits, for which he is widely known and respected, particularly in Australia, where he spends part of each year. Summer is an ideal time to consider out of door locations for portrait painting. The French Impressionists were intrigued with the effects of dappled sunlight and shadows on figures seen en plein air, so on this course – weather permitting – we shall have our models posed in the garden in preference to the studio, to better explore the beautiful and delicate qualities of light, shade and colour on the human figure in natural daylight; encouraging a fresh Impressionistic approach to portraiture. 27. ‘THINK FRINK AT YOUR KITCHEN SINK! Sculpture without firing’
This new course with a gifted sculptor and experienced teacher is designed to enable you to reproduce work in a permanent, cheap and easily resourced material at home and without the need for specialist equipment. During the 3 days Richard will demonstrate and give one to one guidance on modelling in clay and simple mould making techniques. The safe materials, methods and techniques used will allow you to cast your work in quick drying formulated cement that will be ideal for indoor or outdoor purposes and also for public sites. You will be working imaginatively, basing your pieces on your own ideas to produce designs in relief and also in the round. This is a sculpture course for all ability levels; sparing yourself the expense of running a kiln or incurring the exorbitant costs of casting in bronze.

28. ‘THAMES BARGE SAILING/PAINTING in watercolour’
We are delighted to welcome William Newton onto the BAC tutor team for our 16th year of Thames barge cruising along the East Coast. Thames sailing barge ‘Pudge’ has been a firm favourite for some years and we shall once again enjoy being part of the Blackwater Barge Match on this cruise, starting and finishing at Maldon. Initially time will be spent ashore working around the quayside at this picturesque riverside town where there are always numerous barges berthed. We will then set sail and moor further out in the Blackwater estuary to await the race start on the Saturday morning. Following the Match, an evening supper may be taken at the hosting yacht club Prize Giving. On the last day there will be lots of sailing, sketching and painting at Pin Mill. This is a safe and exciting cruise with a professional and experienced skipper and crew to ensure our safety and the exhilaration of being a part of a barge match. A never to be forgotten experience. William is an enthusiast ic tutor and is well known for his professional experience and expertise as a talented watercolourist, whose favourite subjects are Thames barges. 29. ‘NEW NORFOLK NOOKS AND CRANNIES’ This popular course will take you to some new locations in this unspoilt part of North Norfolk to experiment and explore the many ways of combining different water based paints and drawing techniques to produce lively and unusual combinations for mixed media paintings. The emphasis will be on close ups and well observed details, as well as lively loose paintings, rather than wide open landscape subjects. Revel in the colours and textures of natural and man made surfaces and learn how to depict these in the interesting rural subjects to be found nearby, such as old farm gates and styles, ancient stone and brick monuments, weathered old boats, derelict barns and wood and thatch,as well as unruly river banks and mysterious garden corners.

Joe is a diligent and enthusiastic tutor who loves to pass on everything he knows, all imparted through a friendly and easy going teaching style. 34. ‘SENSATIONAL SHIBORI WITH PROCION DYEING’ As President of the Quilter’s Guild of the British Isles, Janice has been involved in patchwork and quilting for the past 30 years and has been teaching and writing on quilting since 1988. On the first day of this course you will produce your own hand dyed fabrics using stitch, tied, pleated and wrapped techniques This fascinating method of patterning fabrics has been used in India and Africa for many years. If you are hooked on Shibori dyeing techniques and want to make a quilt or wall hanging, then this is the course for you. You will be shown how best to design a piece of work with your precious pieces of fabric dyed on the first day. Appliqué, embellishing and quilting techniques and ideas will then be discussed and put into practise, using machine or hand piecing methods for hand or machine quilting.

38. ’LAND, SEA AND SKY – Marine painting in oils’

Roy is one of those unique characters who arrived at painting via unusual routes. A true Cornishman, Roy worked in tin mines and shipyards as a welder and following illness, took up painting in 1999. Although self taught he was voted the SAA Artist of the Year in 2000 and runner up in 2001 and short listed for ‘Not the Turner Prize’ in 2003. He is a natural and unaffected man immediately putting everyone at their ease and is in great demand as a demonstrator and course tutor. His obvious passion for the oil medium, the sea and the coastline he loves is self evident, enabling him to inspire everyone to start painting seascapes. Richard is a well known Suffolk printmaker and designer and an elected member of the Society of Painter Printmakers, studying printmaking – like his father Edward Bawden – at the Royal College of Art. London. He has a natural sense of design, both formal and decorative. His expertise, experience and innovative approach to printmaking place him at the pinnacle of his profession; this coupled with his obvious desire to impart information and skills, make this course a ‘must’ for any printmaker. Richard has exhibited widely at the RA Summer Show and his work is in the collections of the Tate Gallery and V&A museum and many private collections worldwide. The beautiful subtly coloured and sensitive etchings explore the uses of many techniques including the tonal intaglio method of aquatint, sugar lift and soft and hard ground etching. This course offers a variety of safe etching techniques to the complete novice as well as the experienced printmaker. 42. ‘EXPERIMENTAL PRINTMAKING AND COLLAGRAPHY’ - SOLD OUT
Laurie is an experienced and innovative printmaker and qualified teacher who takes inspiration for his own work from the landscape and built environment around him, using intricately drawn and deeply bitten two plate etchings and richly textured collaged plates producing collagraphed prints of often mysterious architectural spaces. During this weekend course you will learn to make collaged plates from normal art materials exploring and incorporating objects and textures. You will then be shown how to integrate these with traditional engraving and mark making techniques. Laurie will introduce you to the delights of intaglio printmaking on a choice of 2 etching presses. Through exploration and experimentation the vast possibilities inherent in different inks, ‘wipes’ and papers for printmaking will begin to be revealed. This course offers a new direction for existing and experienced printmakers and is also an ideal introduction into the realms of printmaking for complete beginners.
